Time to take radical responsibility?

Re-Introducing Ambition

They made you think ambition was bad and a selfish pursuit. They didn't know that the World changes when ambitious folks are given the space to be exactly-that. Let me show you that space - intimate and inside your inbox.

Hey Reader,

Yes, we can spend time complaining about your toxic manager and problematic colleagues. You’ll feel a little bit better…and then dive back into the same can of trash the next day.

This is why I’d rather spend time and energy on things you can control instead of people you can’t; last month at Careers, tea and r&b I shared about a particularly challenging time at work where I took radical responsibility and resourced myself like a spiritual power-ranger once I realised my best strategy is defence - not complaint.

  1. I had a glass of water on my desk - to remind me of my faith, where my help comes from and that the glass is always half-full.
  2. I wore 2 necklaces - one of Jamaica and one of my business name, to remind me of where my roots are and what my mission is.
  3. I took walks and prayed during lunch-breaks and journaled in the coffee shop across the road before entering the building because my-time is exactly-that.

That’s just me. I needed these symbols and rituals to stay grounded amongst the chaos, I knew that this would be for a season and didn’t make that mean I should bear it through gritted teeth and frazzle my nervous system in the process.

I took radical responsibility for every single thing I could control and my perspective started to shift, work was less draining and my peace was less fleeting. I made conscious choices about what would and wouldn't affect me. It didn't mean things were perfect and I became teflon - not at all, but each time I found myself sending the ranty-voicenote about what had happened I let it out then asked myself what I'd do differently next time.

I challenged myself even when there was enough challenge around. I built a new skill and radical responsibility changed everything. Where in your career can you step into radical responsibility? What is within your circle of control or influence to make a tough situation less tenuous?
